Esparto grads receive

commencement awards

 

High honors were bestowed on two brothers, Wayne Joseph Pierson and Forrest Lawrence Pierson at Esparto high school's 1974 com­mencement exercises.

Wayne Joseph Pierson was named salutatorian and his brother, Forrest Lawrence Pierson, along with Marie White, were the class valedictorians.

Jerry Simmons, Esparto high school coun­selor elaborated on the boy's appointments to the United States Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Forrest Lawrence Pierson was nominated to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Wayne Joseph Pierson's ap­pointment was to the U.S. Air Force Academy.

The counselor said the appointments, to his knowledge, were the first appointments from the school.

Wayne Joseph Pierson's address was entitled "A Short History of the Class of 1974". Among the highlights of his speech, the young adult cited the ups and downs of the class' education, making note of the years the students did without various programs, to the present school programs, commenting on the new classroom wing and gym.

"Seize the good and beautiful things" these were words of advice to the graduating seniors, spoken by Marie White in her valedictorian address. Marie's oratory was "Reflections of a Graduating Senior".

"The Advantages of a High School Education" was given by Forrest Lawrence Pierson. Larry pointed out in his valedictorian address the benefit of sacrifices for a good education. Statistics concerning pay scale of high school grads and college graduates were noted, opposed to the non-graduate. The educated reap rich rewards from their sacrifices, said the graduating senior.

Esparto high school Principal, Dick Racki announced the Bank of America awards. The Bank of America certificate in art went to Tim Errington. Bank of America Achievement awards went to Lisa Mast, English; foreign language to Roseann Cook, laboratory science to Joe Pierson, agriculture science to Karon Dunham, business to Marie White and the Bank of America plaque was awarded to Forrest Pierson in science and math.

Mrs. Clarence Mefford, of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented their award to Karen Belden. Mrs. Mefford, said it was a special honor to make the presentation, as she had taught many of these same young adults many years back in kindergarten.

The BPOE recognition award was given to Rachel Ann Moreno by Ernest C. Dozier. Dwayne Crawford presented the outstanding student award, given by California Savings and Loan Company to Forrest Pierson. He received $100 and a gold medallion.

The Philip Storz Memorial award is an award that is traditionally given to the student body president and this year, Walt Robison presented the award to Salvador Joel Galvan

EOP grants to state colleges or state universities were also awarded by Jerry Sim­mons. Receiving grants to Sacramento state were Lee Dennis Benitez, Salvador Galvan, Rachel Ann Moreno, Kevin Pike, Esthela Robles and a grant to the University of California at Davis was granted to Sherri Richards Arellano.

Esparto high school faculty members had also chosen outstanding students in specified fields and this included the following:

Band, Tim Errington; drama, Forrest L. Pierson; secretarial field, Victoria Lynn Darling; outstanding athlete, Karen Annette Belden; outstanding female athlete, Wendy Michel Steele, and the Esparto chamber of commerce award went to Karen Annette Belden and Timothy William Errington.

The Booster Athletic club inserted their award to outstanding athletes in their diplomas. A U.S. Navy representative awarded a cer­tificate of achievement to the Pierson brothers on behalf of the secretary of the navy.

Twelve students graduated with honors as they had an accumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better through the seventh semester ( seniors ) of fifth semester (graduating juniors). Seven junior students graduated with the 1974 class.

Michael Smith, president of the 1974 class greeted the audience and the Esparto high school choir sang two selections "I Believe" and "Let There be Peace on Earth" under Mrs. Linda Johnson, director.

The Reverend William Walsh led the in­vocation and the Reverend William Gearhart said the benediction. Racki presented the class of 1974 and the Esparto school district trustees, Boyce White and Calvin Cowles Mast awarded the class their diplomas.
